An anode rod is a metal rod — typically 3 to 4 feet long — suspended inside the tank from a hex fitting at the top. In most residential units it threads directly into a dedicated port on the heater lid, sometimes hidden beneath a sheet metal cover. It's the only component inside the tank designed to wear out on purpose.
The rod is made from a metal that sits lower on the electrochemical activity series than steel — magnesium, aluminum, or a zinc-aluminum alloy. Because of this, water naturally corrodes the rod material before attacking the steel tank walls. The rod corrodes so the tank doesn't. This process is called sacrificial galvanic protection, and it's the same principle used to protect boat hulls, underground pipelines, and buried fuel storage tanks.
The only reliable way to know the condition of an anode rod is to pull it out and look at it. There's no warning light, no sensor, and no symptom that appears reliably before the rod is already depleted. That's what makes it the most overlooked maintenance item on any water heater.
A new rod is roughly the diameter of your thumb — about 1 inch across. Replace it when the core wire becomes visible along more than half its length, or when the rod has worn down to less than half an inch in diameter. A rod coated in white calcium deposits is still working. A rod exposing a thin steel wire core is spent.
Hot water that smells like sulfur or rotten eggs is a reliable indicator that the rod has been depleted long enough for sulfur-reducing bacteria to colonize the tank. These bacteria react with hydrogen gas produced by a corroding magnesium rod. Switching to a zinc-aluminum rod and flushing the tank eliminates the odor in most cases.
Inspect annually in hard water areas — high mineral content accelerates depletion significantly. In soft or treated water, every 2–3 years is sufficient. If you've owned a home for several years and have never checked the rod, check it now regardless of water type. Most homeowners who do this for the first time find a rod that should have been replaced years ago.

This is a 20–30 minute job on most accessible tank water heaters. You need a 1-1/16 inch socket wrench, a short extension, Teflon tape, and a replacement rod matched to your tank's fitting thread size — typically 3/4 inch NPT.
Turn off the heater first. For electric units, switch the breaker off. For gas, turn the control knob to "Pilot." Then shut the cold water supply valve at the top of the heater and open a hot water tap somewhere in the house to relieve line pressure. Connect a garden hose to the drain valve at the base and drain 2–3 gallons — this reduces the water weight pressing against the rod fitting and keeps the job cleaner.
On most heaters, the rod is accessed from a hex fitting on top of the unit — sometimes under the sheet metal jacket or behind a plastic access cover. Some models integrate the rod into the hot-water outlet fitting itself. Apply steady torque with the 1-1/16 inch socket. If the rod hasn't been serviced in years it will be tight — use a breaker bar for additional leverage rather than a longer wrench. If it still won't move, apply penetrating oil at the fitting and wait 20 minutes before trying again.
Pull the rod and compare it to the table above. Replace it if the core wire is exposed along more than half the length or the rod is under 1/2 inch in diameter. Wrap the threads of the new rod with two passes of Teflon tape, thread it in by hand first, then tighten with the socket — firm but not overtorqued. Restore the water supply, restore power or relight the pilot, and check the fitting for drips after 30 minutes.
